What Does “Mounting a Tire” Mean?
Mounting a tire means putting the tire onto the wheel. After the tire is mounted, it needs to be inflated and balanced so it is safe to drive.
What You Need
Tire irons or pry bars
Tire lube or soapy water
Air pump or air compressor
Valve core tool
Tire pressure gauge
A manual tire machine helps, but you can still do this by hand.
Steps to Mount a Tire at Home
1. Lay the Wheel Flat
Place the wheel on the ground so it doesn’t move.
2. Lube the Tire Bead
Rub lube (or soapy water) around the edge of the tire. This helps the tire slide onto the rim.
3. Push the First Bead On
Press one side of the tire into the wheel. Use a pry bar if you need extra help.
4. Push the Second Bead On
Use your hands or pry bars to push the second tire edge onto the wheel. Go slowly all the way around.
5. Add Air
Use your air pump to inflate the tire. You will hear a “pop” when the tire seals to the rim—this is normal.
6. Check the Pressure
Make sure the tire has the right PSI.
⚠️ Note: You can mount a tire at home, but balancing it usually needs a shop or a mobile tire service (like us!).
